  Eye Injuries

Injuries to the eye can occur from burns, foreign bodies, lacerations and bruising. The loss of the fluid in the eye will result in blindness.

 Foreign objects in the eye should be stabilized in place for treatment and extraction by a physician.

 Chemicals, dirt or sand in the eye should be flushed out very thoroughly. Flush with water from the inside corner to outside of the eye.

 Blunt trauma to the side of the head may cause the eye to pop out of its socket. Do not attempt to set it back into the socket. Simply cover the eye with a moist covering and protective cup. Bandage the cup in place and cover the remaining eye to reduce movement.

 Do not attempt to remove contact lenses yourself. If the patient is capable of removing the lens without further injury to the eye, they may do so.

Remember:
When an injury occurs to one eye, cover both eyes to lessen the movement of the injured eye.
